At the beginning of the 20th century women only used clutch bags; Coco Chanel wanted to design a bag that would enable women to use their hands freely while carrying their belongings. Coco Chanel created a bag inspired by the packs carried by soldiers during WW1, she added a chain strap (inspired by the chains that dangled from the caretaker’s waists in the convent where she grew up) to a clutch to make it easier to carry. The 2.55 was born, named after the date is was created, February 1955. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the signature bag, Chanel released an exact version of the original creation, named “Reissue 2.55”. This title only applies to the bags released for the 50th anniversary but it is commonly used to describe all 2.55 bags that resemble the original design.
Key features: burgundy interior that reflects the color of the uniforms in the convent where Coco Chanel grew up. The square lock, called “the Mademoiselle Lock”, in reference to Coco Chanel never marrying.
Sizes:  ranges from cute baby (7.5” x 6 x 2) to rare maxi (14” x 10” x 3”)
Classic flap
Often confused with the 2.55, as the two bags look very similar at first glance. Both have the same shape, signature quilting and adjustable strap. However, the 2.55 has a plain chain strap, whilst the classic flap has chain strap interwoven with leather. Another difference is the front closure: the 2.55 lock is a rectangular shape with a twist closure, but the classic flap has a double cc turn closure.
Key features: signature burgundy interior with  double flap, iconic double cc logo as the closure, zip pocket inside the flap that Coco Chanel apparently created to hide her love letters. As well as the quilted exterior, the diamond pattern was inspired by jockey uniforms as Coco Chanel was a lover of horses.
Sizes: various different sizes ranging from extra mini (6.5″ W x 4″ H x 3″ D) to jumbo (13″ W x 9″ H x 4″ D)
Chanel Boy
The Chanel boy was designed by Karl Lagerfeld for the Spring 2012 collection, it was inspired by Coco Chanel’s well know boyish charm. The Chanel boy is a modern update of the original 2.55, it’s available in the signature leathers as well as various bold colors and materials, such as tweed or velvet.
Key features:  a wide border surrounds the quilted center, thick and wide chain strap that includes an adjustable leather panel. The lock closure does feature the double cc logo, but is a push closure. The chain strap and hardware have a more rustic and worn look.
Sizes: Small to Large Shoulder Bags, the collection also includes a Clutch and Tote
Seasonal Items
Each season Chanel creates unique seasonal versions of the above bags to reflect the current collections theme.  As well as quirky styles and shapes that are always attention grabbing both on and off the catwalk. Some stand outs include the SS13 hula hoop bag, Cruise 14 Perspex Chanel No5 perfume shape bag and FW 14/15 milk cart shaped lait de Coco bag.
All Chanel bags come in various different materials, but here's a quick guide to three main leathers.

A very soft and smooth leather, that will give a more luxe feel to your bag. Its quite a delicate leather and needs to be treated with care, it should be stored away from sunlight and sharp objects. However, its gorgeous finish and buttery soft texture make it the most popular leather.
Caviar Leather
A durable and strong calfskin leather, that has a grainy texture. Even though it doesn’t have the soft texture like lambskin, its very hard-wearing and doesn’t show scratches. A great material of choose for an every day bag.
Patent Leather
It gives a very polished and shiny look, that works well with bright colors. It can be wiped cleaned but be careful as it’s susceptible to color transfer and scratches. A very popular material among Chanel collectors.
